Toronto garbage strike - June/July 09 - protests
Our city's strike started June 22; this protest was near Spadina on Phoebe St., across from Ogden Jr. public school.
this neighbourhood is one of the last near the city centre to be undergoing gentrification.
one possible reason for this late blooming is the "filth" of Chinatown, and close proximity of Queen St. West's 'alternative' culture in the 90s, provided enough of a deterrent for middle-class sensibility to move in.
As alternative became mainstream, "reverse suburbanization" is making it's way north from Queen St. toward the heart of Chinatown with the aestheticization (and subsequent fetishization) of space ever more prominent.
