GUELDER BERRIES.

this plant/shrub has the flowers and seeds of the elder. but the leaves of the sycamore, minus the two small bottom lobes. there is 3 groups of these tall wispy woody stemed plants, grouped together-with some small elder and sycamore shrubs beside them. one of the local worthies, reckons they may be a hybrid cross of the elder and sycamore.a mutant of cross pollination - i am not sure, any one know what they are. just found out that it is guelder-rose, (viburnum opulus) or water elder, the leafs are like the maple acer type.the flowers are hermaphrodite, and produce red berries, it also the national symbol of ukraine, the berries appear not long after the shrub has shed it's flowers. which bloom for less than 2 weeks, it is likly that the seeds for these few shrubs, were dropped by migrating birds from the continent, as i can't find anymore of these plants other than at the becks wood, langholm, dumfiesshire. view large
