USCG Academy sailing team vessel

This boat was built by Morris Yachts in Maine. Much fun to see a boat designed for function, maintainability, and especially safety.

Devoid of silly stuff that panders to marketing fads, this boat is a well thought out machine. The Naval Academy offshore sailing team has boats reflecting a similiar design philosophy.

I noted that this vessel has the radar antenna installed on a stern mounted post. In 2001 for my sailboat, I went through the internal debate of whether to mount the radar on the mast or a stern post. This is a debate with no definitive conclusion thus it boils down to what one is comfortable with. With a post I have the advantage of mounting an arm to support the block and tackle for lifting my 8 hp outboard off the inflatable dinghy. A down side is the very short distance from the antenna dome to the back bar of the travel lift when the boat is being hauled. No damage yet but it is too close for comfort.

This boat and the Navy's sailing team vessel use Treadmaster non-skid on the decks which is the same material I have been installing on my sailboat. If I slip overboard and drown it won't be for cutting corners on the non-skid.

This boat and her sisterships are funded by the USCG Alumni Assoc., foundations and other donations thus not at tax payer expense.
