Commodity Fetishism

This is all explained, according to Zizek, by Marx's theory of "commodity fetishism", the idea that the way we behave in society is determined by objective market forces rather than subjective beliefs. "The importance is in what you do, not in what you think. I love this dialectical reversal."

Commondity Fetishism appears as a curse upon our society. One would naturally desire to be driven by subjective beliefs rather than outside forces. This statement places humans into a slave-like mentality to money and the money market. The value no longer resides in the mind or heart, but rather in the wallet. Marx theory casts a pessimistic attitude of the progress of our culture.
