Some EMD Variety!
CP 7000, BNSF 9669, and BNSF 8771 (along with an unpictured KCS SD70ACe on the rear) have 111 empty tank cars slithering noisily through the curves along the west bank of the Mississippi River on this late March afternoon. The 577 train is crossing Panther Creek at the small hamlet of North Buena Vista, Iowa. A day before one of the few snowfalls of this quite brown winter had fallen, but temps above freezing during the day have already mostly melted it away except for in shaded areas like the bluff at right. The distant bluffs across the River are in Wisconsin.
CPKC's trains around the Marquette Sub in this PSR era are definitely dominated by a variety of dirty GEs from multiple roads (CPKC, UP, BNSF, NS, CSX, etc), though the occasional nice nugget can be found. But a colorful EMD trio like this was definitely something that made me take notice when it rolled by the Bellevue, Iowa webcam on a Saturday afternoon. I had visions of a sunny view at this spot I recently discovered with my drone, but alas the clouds won out this time. Still was worth the effort to me though!
The small Mississippi River river town of North Buena Vista is off the beaten path and is mostly an out-of-the-way vacation spot with lots of cabins. The water-logged shelters in the lower right are boat slips, and the boat at center-left is regularly moored there, I believe as a floating store that travelers on the Mississippi River can stop at during warmer weather while boating, fishing, and tubing. But this "spring" afternoon the two small bars in town were both open with a number of local patrons inside watching the TV to cheer on the Iowa Women's Basketball team and phenom Catlin Clark in their first March Madness game, perhaps adding a little extra activity to this sleepy outpost.
