Este lugar evoca el episodio de la Odisea cuando, de regreso a Ítaca después de la Guerra de Troya, Ulises y sus compañeros llegaron a la Isla Eea “donde están la mansión y las danzas de Eos, hija de la mañana, y el orto del Helios” (Episodio XII de La Odisea. Homero). Allí la hechicera Circe le da consejos para continuar su camino: “Llegarás primero a las sirenas, que encantan a cuantos hombres van a su encuentro. Aquel que imprudentemente se acerca a ellas y oye su voz, ya no vuelve a ver a su esposa ni a sus hijos pequeñuelos rodeándole, llenos de júbilo, cuando torna a sus hogares; sino que le hechizan las sirenas con el sonoro canto, sentadas en una pradera y teniendo a su alrededor enorme montón de huesos de hombres putrefactos cuya piel se va consumiendo. Pasa de largo y tapa las orejas de tus compañeros con cera blanda, previamente adelgazada, a fin de que ninguno las oiga; mas si tú desearas oírlas, haz que te aten en la velera embarcación de pies y manos, derecho y arrimado a la parte inferior del mástil, y que las sogas se liguen al mismo; y así podrás deleitarte escuchando a las sirenas. Y caso de que supliques o mandes a los compañeros que te suelten, átente con más lazos todavía”. De este modo pudieron rehuir el hechizo de los cantos prosiguiendo su aventura por mar.

One who recklessly approaches them and obey his voice, and not return to see his wife and their children little ones around him, full of joy, when turns to their homes but the Sirens enchant him with loud singing, sitting in a meadow and taking around huge pile of rotting bones of men whose skin is consumed. Spend long and cover the ears of your companions with soft wax, previously thinned, so that no one hears them but if you hear shellfish, do you boat sailer bind on hand and foot, and leaning to the right hand lower mast and ropes from binding to the same, and so you can delight listening to the sirens. And if you send to beg or you loose companions, still threatens more ties. "Thus shunning could spell chants continuing their adventure by sea.
