El impacto social ha sido enorme, puesto que los embalses supusieron la destrucción de más de quinientos pueblos, que se encuentran actualmente bajo el agua. Las barreras artificiales alteran los ecosistemas fluviales desde la cabecera de los ríos hasta su desembocadura; modifican el proceso natural de erosión y transporte de sedimentos, el régimen de caudales y la calidad del agua; obstaculizan el movimiento natural de la flora y la fauna autóctonas y favorecen la adaptación de especies no deseadas.
Spain is one of the countries with the largest number of reservoirs for territory and inhabitants. The social impact has been enormous, since the reservoirs involved the destruction of more than five hundred people, who are currently underwater. Artificial barriers alter river ecosystems from the head of the river to its mouth; modify the natural process of erosion and sediment transport, the flow regime and water quality, impede the natural movement of flora and fauna and favor the adaptation of unwanted species.
