El bosque estaba desamparado. Necesitaba un árbol que les gobernara. Se reunieron las hayas para negociar y pidieron al olivo que fuese su rey. Éste contestó que no podía renunciar al líquido aceite, que tanto aprecian los dioses y los hombres, para reinar entre los árboles.
Decidieron las hayas recurrir a la higuera, que se negó argumentando que no podía renunciar a la dulzura de sus frutos para reinar entre los árboles.
Entonces intentaron con el espino. Le dijeron: “Ven a reinar entre nosotros”. Y el espino respondió a las hayas: “Si en verdad queréis ungirme para reinar entre vosotros, venid a poneros bajo mi amparo, o sino ¡que surja el fuego de la espina y devore los cedros del Líbano!
MORALEJA: Quien no tiene buenos frutos que dar, lo malo que dé será para sufrimiento de los que le rodean (Basado en una de las fábulas de Esopo: “Los árboles que querían rey”
