Los bosques son ecosistemas imprescindibles para la vida. Son el habitat de multitud de seres vivos, regulan el agua, conservan el suelo y la atmósfera y suministran multitud de productos útiles. En las zonas continentales más del 50% de la humedad del aire está ocasionada por el agua bombeada por las raíces y transpirada por las hojas de la vegetación. Cuando se talan los bosques o selvas de áreas extensas el clima se hace más seco.
