Vigil for Afghans, Killed by U.S. Soldier Massacre

On March 11, at least one U.S. soldier brutally massacred 16 Afghan people in Kandahar province. On March 12, funeral ceremonies are being held for the Afghans killed in Panjwai district.

A candle-light vigil was held on Monday (March 12) at 7pm on the south side of Union Square in Manhattan -- to pay respect to the victims, their families and communities.

This vigil was initiated by Iraq Veterans Against the War, South Asia Solidarity Initiative, Pakistan Solidarity Network, War Resisters League, and other NYC-based people of conscience. The vigil brought attention to:

1) the vigils being held on Monday led by Afghans For Peace in London, Toronto, and California;

2) the work of soldiers and veterans at Coffee Strong in Washington state who see this massacre as part of systemic dehumanization and violence traced to Lewis-McChord base;

3) the ordinary Afghans and Afghan civil society activists who are mourning, speaking out, and protesting war, violence, and dehumanization.
