Great Eggfly
The Great Eggfly (Hypolimnas bolina), also called the Common Eggfly, Varied Eggfly or in New Zealand Blue Moon, is a species of nymphalid butterfly.
This species is found from Madagascar through South and Southeast Asia to parts of Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Japan. This butterfly is a fairly common butterfly found in lightly wooded country, deciduous forests, thick and moist scrub and the greener parts of human habitation.
The Great Eggfly is divided into eight subspecies. The Great Eggfly is a black-bodied butterfly with a wingspan of about 70–85 mm. The species has a high degree of sexual dimorphism. The female is mimetic with multiple morphs. The butterfly in the photo is a male with characteristic three pairs of white spots which shine purple as the light catches them.
This picture was taken in de Vlinderhof (the butterfly house) in the Utrechtse Botanische Tuinen (botanical gardens of the Utrecht University) in the Netherlands.
