Resting Gray Cracker

The Gray Cracker or Februa Cracker (Hamadryas februa) is a species of cracker butterfly in the family Nymphalidae (20 members). They acquired their common name “cracker” due to the unusual way that males produce a "cracking" sound as part of their territorial displays as they fly to interact with other insects. The butterfly is grey, brown and white speckled. The wingspan is approximately 6,5 – 8,5 cm. The Gray Cracker is found south of the Amazon River to Argentina, and north through tropical South America, Central America to Mexico, and on the Caribbean islands. A rare stray to the lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. Habitat: Subtropical forest and edges, cultivated areas with trees.

This picture of the Gray Cracker Butterfly had been taken in the butterfly house Vlindervallei (Butterfly Valley), part of the Orchideeënhoeve (Orchid Farm) in Luttelgeest, the Netherlands.
