Resting Gray Cracker
The Gray Cracker or Februa Cracker (Hamadryas februa) is a species of cracker butterfly in the family Nymphalidae (20 members). They acquired their common name “cracker” due to the unusual way that males produce a "cracking" sound as part of their territorial displays as they fly to interact with other insects. The butterfly is grey, brown and white speckled. The wingspan is approximately 6,5 – 8,5 cm. The Gray Cracker is found south of the Amazon River to Argentina, and north through tropical South America, Central America to Mexico, and on the Caribbean islands. A rare stray to the lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. Habitat: Subtropical forest and edges, cultivated areas with trees.
