The Red Rim or Crimson-banded Black (Biblis hyperia) is a species of Nymphalidae.

This butterfly is widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical areas in South and Central America from Paraguay northward to Mexico and southern Texas.

The Red Rim lives in open forests and grasslands, and along riverbanks and roadsides.

It is found at altitudes between sea level and about 1000m but is more frequent below 500m.

They have a velvety brown to black forewing with a dark grey hindwing.

The hindwing has a pinkish-red band. Both sexes are identical. The wingspan is 5.0 - 7.5 cm.

This picture was taken in the indoor butterfly garden "De Passiflorahoeve" in Harskamp, the Netherlands. Info: www.passiflorahoeve.nl/
