Female Julia Longwing

Each year on April 30, the Netherlands goes orange for Queen’s Day (in Dutch: Koninginnedag).

The colors of the official Dutch flag are from about 1660 red, white, and blue.

Why do people from Holland wear orange if it's not in their flag?

Orange is the national colour of the Netherlands. This comes from the history of the Dutch people and the person that lead them into their independance. William I of Orange (also known as "Prince of Orange", "William the Silent" and "Father of the Fatherland") organized the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule, which after the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), too the Dutch War of Independence, led to an independent Dutch state. The flag of William I of Orange (House of Orange-Nassau) is orange, white and blue.

Dutch athletes, the Dutch football team and the fans are usually too dressed in orange all over the world.

The butterfly in the picture is the dazzling orange Julia Longwing (Dryas iulia), also commonly called the Fackel, Julia Butterfly or Julia Heliconian, is a species of brush- or four-footed butterfly (Nymphalidae).

The Julia Longwing is widespread and common in the southern United States, and extends south through Central America and much of the Caribbean, and throughout all of the tropical and subtropical areas of South America. Wingspan 75 to 95 mm.

This picture was taken in the butterfly house in Diergaarde Blijdorp (Zoo Rotterdam, Netherlands).
