Ethilia longwing butterfly
The ethilia longwing (Heliconius ethilla) is a butterfly of the big tropical Nymphalidae family.
This butterfly has long, narrow wings. The forewings are orange with a black margin and four black spots. The hindwings are orange with two black stripes. The wingspan is 60 - 70 mm.
The ethilia longwing is found from Panama to southern Brazil in South America. The habitat consists of marginal forests.
This picture was taken in the tropical butterfly house of the botanical gardens of the Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
De ethilia longwing (Heliconius ethilla), er is geen Nederlandse naam voor deze vlinder, is een vertegenwoordiger uit uit de onderfamilie van de passiebloemvlinders (Heliconiinae).
De vlinder heeft lange smalle vleugels. De voorvleugels zijn oranje met zwarte randen en vier zwarte vlekken. De achtervleugels zijn oranje met twee zwarte strepen. De spanwijdte is 60 à 70 mm.
De ethilia longwing komt voor in de tropische regenwouden tussen het zeeniveau en 1800 meter in de tropische van Panama tot zuidelijk Brazilië in Zuid-Amerika.
Er zijn 25 ondersoorten van de ethilia longwing die op vooral in de details, tekening en kleuren licht van elkaar verschillen.
