Sun fly (Helophilus pendulus)
The Sun Fly, Tiger Hoverfly or Footballer (Helophilus pendulus) is an 11 to 13 mm long hoverfly that can be seen on flowers from April to October. This hoverfly is found in Europe and Asia, but also in North Africa and parts of North America. The insect is easily confused with a wasp and that is understandable because the hoverfly has camouflaged itself (form of mimicry) as a wasp.
The hoverfly, like the wasp and the bee, searches for nectar.
De gewone zweefvlieg of pendelzweefvlieg (Helophilus pendulus) is een 11 à 13 mm lange zweefvlieg die van april tot in oktober overal op bloemen te zien is. De zweefvlieg komt in Europa en Azië voor, maar ook in Noord-Africa en delen van Noord-America.
Het insect wordt gemakkelijk verward met een wesp en dat is ook wel begrijpelijk want de gewone zweefvlieg heeft zich gecamoufleerd (vorm van mimicry) als wesp.
De zweefvlieg zoekt net als de wesp en de bij naar nectar.
