Marken boatyard

The Marken boatyard in the Dutch Open Air Museum in Arnhem. This part of the boatyard (shipyard), known as De Hoop, only repaired and maintained vessels.

Boats were built at the main yard in Monnickendam.

On the island of Marken repairs were carried out and barnacles and other shellfish removed from hulls. To perform this work, the boats were hauled up the slipway using a capstan.

The yard closed in 1947 and was transferred to the museum in 1948.

Founded in 1912, the Dutch Open Air Museum (Dutch: Nederlands Openluchtmuseum) is picturesquely situated in the rolling forested landscape near Arnhem, the Netherlands.
