Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius)
The Scarce Swallowtail, Sail Swallowtail or Pear-tree Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) is a very impressive butterfly of the family Papilionidae (the Swallowtails).
With a wingspan of 6.0 - 8.5 cm the Scarce Swallowtail is one of the largest butterflies from Europe. The imago has yellowish white wings with typical black tiger-bands. Margin of hind wing with row of blue blotches and one red blotch. The body is yellowish with two fine strips on the side, but the upside is black. Sex differences: None
The Scarce Swallowtail is easily separated from the common swallowtail (Papilio machaon) and it has longer tails.
Despite its English name, which is due to its extreme scarcity in England (a very occasional migrant), the scarce swallowtail is not generally scarce in Europe. It is widespread throughout Europe with the exception of the northern parts. South of the Alps is the species very common; north of the Alps mostly local or as migratory butterfly. It is also found in northern Africa, the Middle East and eastward into western China.
This species occurs in warm and usually dry habitats from sea level to at least 1500 - 2000 meters.

De Koningspage (Iphiclides podalirius) is een zeer indrukwekkende vlinder uit de familie van de grote pages (Papilionidae).
Met een vleugelspanwijdte van 6,0 à 8,5 cm is de koningspage één van de grootste vlinders van Europa.
De volwassen vlinder heeft wit tot crèmekleurige vleugels met op de voorvleugel aan de bovenkant typische zwarte strepen (tijgerstrepen). Op de bovenkant van de achtervleugel liggen langs de achterrand enkele blauwe vlekken en een grotere rode vlek.
Door de lichtere kleur en de strepen is koningspage gemakkelijk te onderscheiden van de koninginnenpage (Papilio machaon). Ook heeft de koningspage aan de achtervleugel een langer staartje.
De koningspage is wijdverbreid in Europa met uitzondering van Scandinavië en de Britse eilanden. Ten zuiden van de Alpen is de soort zeer algemeen; ten noorden van de Alpen komt de vlinder vooral lokaal voor of als trekvlinder. In Nederland en België is de koningspage een incidentele zwerver tijdens warme zomers.
De koningspage leeft ook in noordelijk Afrika, het Midden-Oosten en naar het oosten tot in het westen van China.
De vlinder houdt van warme, meestal droog gebieden van zeeniveau tot ten minste 1500 à 2000 meter.
