Galgewater (Gallows Water) in Leiden
View on ‘Galgewater’ (gallows water), a part of the ‘Oude Rijn’ (Old Rhine) in Leiden, the Netherlands. ‘Galgewater’ is a reference to the gallows (Galg) which used to stand here.
Behind on the left you can see the ‘Mill De Put’ (replica 1987), the original mill dates back to 1619 and the ‘Rembrandt Bruggetje’ (Rembrandt Bridge) is a replica from a 17th century bridge.
On the right a few historical boats.
Leiden is a city and municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. Leiden is located on the Old Rhine, in a distance of some 18 km from The Hague in its South and some 45 km from Amsterdam in its North. Its number of inhabitants is about 120,000.
In the oldest reference to this, from circa 860, the settlement was called Leithon.
Leiden formed on an hill at the confluence of the rivers Oude and Nieuwe Rijn (Old and New Rhine), which enter Leiden on the east, unite in the centre of the town. The town is further intersected by numerous small canals with tree-bordered quays.
Leiden University, founded in 1575, is the oldest university in the Netherlands.
Because of the economic decline from the 17th to the early 20th century, much of the 16th and 17th century town centre is still intact. It's reportedly the second largest 17th century town centre in the Netherlands, the largest being Amsterdam's town centre.
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606 in Leiden, where he spent his formative years. Later he went to Amsterdam, where he reached his greatest fame as a painter. But Leiden is of course proud of her most famous son.

Leiden ontstond als dijkdorp aan de voet van een kunstmatige heuvel aan de samenvloeiing van de Oude en de Nieuwe Rijn. In de oudste vermelding daarvan, omstreeks 860, werd het toenmalige dorp Leithon genoemd.
In de Gouden Eeuw was Leiden, na Amsterdam, de op één na grootste stad van Nederland. De bevolkingsgroei (rond 1670 al 70.000 inwoners) maakte het aanleggen van nieuwe grachten en singels noodzakelijk. Het huidige centrum van Leiden, herkenbaar aan het singelpatroon, werd in 1659 voltooid. De Sleutelstad, zoals de bijnaam van de stad luidt, heeft de oudste universiteit (opgericht in 1575) van Nederland. Daarnaast is de stad bekend om de rijke geschiedenis en de oude binnenstad, met grachten, monumentale bouwwerken en hofjes.
Verschillende oude meesters hebben banden met Leiden. Zo werden Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Gerrit Dou en Frans van Mieris de Oudere in Leiden geboren. Allen waren lange tijd werkzaam in de stad en zijn - op Rembrandt na - ook in Leiden gestorven.
