Small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae)
The Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) is one of the most common butterflies in Europe with an easily recognisable pattern of orange with black, yellow and blue markings on the upper surface of the wings. The underside is dark brown marbling and very dreary.
The wingspan is 4.5 - 5.5 cm. The body is black and hairy.
The Small Tortoiseshell is widespread from the Atlantic coast of West-Europe across Russia to the Pacific coast of East-Asia.
It is perhaps the most well known of the nettle dependent butterflies and a frequent visitor to gardens in late summer.
De kleine vos (Aglais urticae) is een van de meest voorkomende vlinders in Europa, ook in Nederland, met een gemakkelijk herkenbaar kleurenpatroon.
De basiskleur van de bovenkant van de vleugels is oranje met zwarte, gele en blauwe vlekken. De onderkant is donkerbruin, gemarmerd en erg somber. De spanwijdte van de vleugels is 4,5 à 5,5 cm. Het lichaam is zwart en behaard.
De kleine vos is wijdverspreid van de Atlantische kust van West-Europa, via Rusland tot de kust van de Grote Oceaan in Oost-Azië.
Het is misschien wel de meest bekende van de brandnetel afhankelijk vlinders en een frequent bezoeker van tuinen in de late zomer. De waardplant is de algemeen voorkomende grote brandnetel.
