Portrait Rock Eagle-Owl

The Rock Eagle-Owl (Bubo bengalensis), also called the Indian Eagle-Owl, Bengal Eagle-Owl or Indian Great Horned Owl, is a species of large horned owl found in South Asia, the Indian Subcontinent south of the Himalayas and below 1500 meter elevation.

Distribution: West Himalayas, Pakistan, throughout India, Kashmir, Nepal, Assam and Burma. They are seen in scrub and light to medium forests but are especially seen near rocky places within the mainland.

The Indian Eagle-Owls are typically large owls, and have "tufts" on their heads. They are splashed with brown, and grey and have a white throat patch with black small stripes. The Indian Eagle-Owls were earlier treated as a subspecies of the Eurasian Eagle-Owl (bubo bubo) and is very similar in appearance. The facial disk is unmarked and has a black border, a feature that is much weaker in the Eurasian form. Its height is 50-56 cm with a wingspan of 36 to 43 cm. The larger Eurasian Eagle-Owl is 58-75 cm. The weight is 1000-1200 gr. Females of this species are larger than the males. The eyes are Orange-yellow to orange-red, and the bill greenish-horn to slate-black. They are usually seen in pairs.

The main diet of this bird is made up of rodents and other small mammals, however they will occasionally also eat birds.
