Underside Southern White Admiral
The Southern White Admiral (Limenitis reducta) is a beautiful and really striking woodland butterfly. It is found in northern Spain, south and east France, and eastwards across southern central Europe, Italy and the Balkan to Turkey and Iran.
With a wingspan of 5.0 to 7.5 cm is the Souther White Admiral a small member of the the Nymphalidae family (the brush-footed butterflies or four-footed butterflies).
The upperside of butterfly is black or dark brown with is a chain of big white spots, which is crossing the wing. At the margin there is a chain of little white spots. It has a lovely blue sheen on the upperside that varies with the angle of light.
The underside is orange and brown. Nearly all white spots from upside are also there. Only the chain of white spots at the margin is change to a chain of black and orange spots. Around the body there is a white and bluish area.
The blue iridescence and a single row of black spots on the underside of the hind wing distinguishes the Southern White Admiral from the highly simular White Admiral (Limenitis camilla) from about the same range, but also more northerly, in which the underside of the hind wing has a double row of black spots.

Onderkant blauwe ijsvogelvlinder

In Twente, de Achterhoek, het zuidoosten van de Veluwe, oostelijk Noord-Brabant en delen van Limburg leeft een voor Nederland vrij zeldzame standvlinder, de kleine ijsvogelvlinder (Limenitis camilla).
Een sterk gelijkende soort is de hier afgebeelde nauw verwante blauwe ijsvogelvlinder (Limenitis reducta) uit zuid Europa.
De blauwe ijsvogelvlinder vliegt van zeeniveau tot circa 1500 meter hoogte in bossen bij beekjes en andere vochtige plaatsen in het gebied van noord Spanje, zuid- en oost-Frankrijk, Italië en de Balkan. Hoogst zelden wordt de blauwe ijsvogelvlinder als dwaalgast in Nederland en België aangetroffen.
De blauwe ijsvogelvlinder doet zijn naam eer aan door de blauwe gloed op de bovenzijde van de vleugels. De bovenkant van de vlinder is bij het mannetje zwart en bij het vrouwtje donkerbruin. Er loopt een gebogen witte band over het midden van de vleugels. Bij de voorvleugel is deze band wat onderbroken. Een tweede verschil met de kleine ijsvogel is dat naast de blauwe gloed bij de blauwe ijsvogelvlinder aan de bovenzijde van de vleugel een duidelijke witte vlek extra zit. De vleugelspanwijdte is 5 cm tot 7,5 cm.
