Rare bush dogs
The bush dog (Speothos venaticus) is a rare, little known and unusual canid, more like a mustelid (badger).
It is uniformly dark brown in colour with short legs. The head-body length is 55-70 cm, the height is 25-30 cm and it weights 5-8 kg.
At the shoulders, the brown-reddish colour of the head turns into the dark brown of the rest of the body. The under parts are also dark. The coat is short and coarse. The black tail is very short.
Bush dogs are found from Panama in Central America, through much of South America east of the Andes, as far south as central Bolivia, Paraguay, and southern Brazil. The bush dog inhabits lowland forest, semi-deciduous forest and seasonally flooded forest, but also cerrado and wet savannahs. It is always close to water.
Bush dogs are carnivores and hunt during the day.
De boshond is een zeldzame niet zo bekende hondachtige.
Hun nauwste nog levende verwant is waarschijnlijk de manenwolf.
De boshond heeft een donkerbruine vacht, die langzaam overgaat in de lichter gekleurde kop en nek. De onderzijde is ook donker. Sommige dieren hebben een witte keelvlek. Boshonden hebben een lange romp, een brede kop met een korte snuit en kleine, afgeronde oren. De poten en de staart zijn kort.
Ze worden 55 tot 70 cm lang en 25 tot 30 cm hoog. De staart wordt 11 tot 15 cm lang. Boshonden wegen 5 tot 8 kg.
Boshonden komen voornamelijk voor in bossen nabij riviertjes en andere wateren. Ook wagen ze zich op grasland, bijvoorbeeld pampa's en cerrado's. De hond komt voor tot 1.900 meter hoogte.
Het verspreidingsgebied loopt van zuidelijk Midden-Amerika (Panama), moordelijk Zuid-Amerika en midden Zuid-Amerika tot aan het noordoosten van Argentinië.
De boshond is meestal overdag actief en waarschijnlijk de meest sociale hondachtige van Zuid-Amerika, en de meest sociale soort van zijn grootte. Boshonden worden regelmatig waargenomen in groepen van drie tot tien dieren. Ze jagen ook in groepen.
