Hewitson's Longwing Butterfly

The Hewitson's Longwing Butterfly (Heliconius sapho hewitsoni, too Heliconius hewitsoni) is a butterfly of the big tropical Nymphalidae family, commonly known as the longwings or heliconians (39 species).

This butterfly has long, narrow black wings with two yellowwhite forewing bands and one yellowwhite hindwing band. The underside is similar, but with small red patches close to the body. The wingspan is 55 to 80 mm.

Hewitson's Longwing is found on the Pacific Slope of western Panama and Costa Rica. The butterfly occurs from sea level to 1,500 m in the tropical rainforest. Usually individuals fly rapidly and in the canopy.
