Peleides Blue Morpho
The sensational Blue Morpho refers to several almost identical species of the Morpho butterfly. The three most well-known are Morpho menelaus, Morpho rhetenor and here in the picture Morpho peleides. The beatiful Blue Morpho (Morpho peleides), too Peleides Blue Morpho, Common Morpho and The Emperor, is an iridescent tropical butterfly found in the tropical rainforests of Mexico, Central America, northern South America and Trinidad.
The Blue Morpho Butterfly is a large butterfly with a wingspan that may measure up to 15 - 20 cm. It has iridescent blue wings with black wing edges. The upper edges are flecked with white.
The butterfly's brilliant metallic blue coloration is the result of light diffraction from millions of tiny scales on the wings. Females are much less colorful than males.
The underside of the Blue Morpho Butterfly is pale in coloration with many large false eyespots.

De prachtige blue morpho verwijst naar een aantal vrijwel identieke vlinders uit het geslacht Morpho. De drie bekendste soorten zijn de Morpho menelaus, Morpho rhetenor en hier op de foto Morpho peleides. De metalic blauwe blue morpho (Morpho peleides) is een iriserende tropische vlinder gevonden in de tropische regenwouden van Mexico, Midden-Amerika, noordelijk Zuid-Amerika en Trinidad.
De blue morpho is een grote vlinder met een vleugelspanwijdte tot 15 à 20 cm. De blauwe vleugels zijn aan de randen zwart met witte vlekjes. De vrouwtjes zijn iets fletser van kleur dan de mannetjes.
De onderkant van de blue morpho zijn grijs bruin met meerdere valse oogvlekken.
De prachtige blauwe kleur van de vlinder komt niet door pigment maar door de microscopische structuur van de vleugels en is een structurele kleur. De kleur verandert wat met de waarnemingshoek en de intensiteit neemt sterk toe bij opvallend licht. Dit wordt iriseren genoemd.
Deze blue morpho is gefotografeerd in de Zuid-Amerikaanse vlinderhal "Amazonica" in Diergaarde Blijdorp.
