Proud Pileated Parent

(Nice Large)

Well my Flickr friends, I believe both of the Pileated woodpecker young I have been watching have now successfully left the nest. I visited it this morning for nearly an hour and saw no signs of activity at all. Kind of a weird feeling for me, as I had really grown to love my daily encounters with this family of woodpeckers. I walked about a third of the park looking for them. I didn't see them, but heard their distinctive cry off in the distance. Not sure if it was parent or young, but I will keep looking for them, and hope to see them again. I read that fledgling pileateds sometimes stay with their parents for up to 3 months while the adults teach the young about the ways of their world. I wish them all the best.
