NGC 253 Sculptor
NGC 253, The "Silver Coin Galaxy". At a distance of ~10Mly, it is the nearest starburst galaxy to us. It is undergoing an intense burst of star creation as indicated by the many red star-forming regions and blue knots of clusters of hot young stars surrounding the reddish-yellow core of old stars. The numerous dust lanes that adorn the disk are the products of previous generations of stars.
The image is new data collected at the longer focal length of 1500mm; Takahashi TOA130 (with 1.5x extender, fl = 1500mm, f12.1)/EM-200 Temma2/SBIG11000M combination; LRGB = 5hr25min.
