Pink Panther - gearbox diagram
This page shows the whole automaton. The motor/gearbox (bottom left) has been selected to turn at an appropriate speed to directly drive the music box via a vertical shaft with two bevel gears at the top to turn the motion to horizontal, to drive the music box shaft. The motor shaft also has a worm gear attached, which is used to drive a vertically mounted spur gear (30 teeth). The gear has 30 teeth because it takes 30 turns of the music box to play the whole tune and get back to the start. So the gear will turn one complete revolution in the time it takes to play the tune. A pair of bevel gears will turn the motion through 90 degrees onto a vertical shaft. On the vertical shaft a gear with 40 teeth will be mounted with 30 teeth removed, leaving 10, which will in turn rotate a 10 toothed spur gear through one revolution in the last 1/4 of the action (just under 4 seconds). This spur gear will have a disc with a pin in it stuck to its side. The pin will engage in a slider mechanism, or operate a bell crank (not decided yet) to turn the Pink Panther's head through 90 degrees and back again. [Nothing is drawn to scale in this diagram].
