THUNDER IN THE VALLEY

A July monsoon storm thunders across the Tucson valley floor discharging awesome bolts of lightning. These isolated storm cells can suddenly stir up 60 mph winds, flash floods and forest fires. This storm is over the Rincon Mountains and was shot from the Catalina Mountains about ten miles away.

This storm cell was throwing out lighting every few minutes for about a half hour. Since it was still daytime and just before sunset I couldn't shoot on bulb the way I do at night for lighting shots. Instead I set my camera on continuous setting and fired away through 8 GB of memory hoping one shot would catch a lighting bolt. This image is composed of two shots tonemapped in Photomatix and adjusted in Photoshop elements.
