ANGRY SKY

During the Southern Arizona monsoon season in July and August, photographers from around the world come to Tucson to capture these amazing lighting storms. I captured this electrical storm from a hill behind my house. I chase lightning during this time of year with a buddy. We follow the doppler reports on the net...plan our chase strategy and load the gerar up. On a good night there could be 4 or 5 isolated thunder and lighting storms within a thirty mile radius....but some nights the storm cells just won't form...it's a big gamble chasing these storms. But the pay-off is big if you capture some awesome mega bolts. I still use my 33 year old Nikormat FTN with 35mm slide film but I think I'll try the digital this year. The best way to shoot lighting on film is set at Bulb; 5.6; focus to infininity; use a cable release; open the shutter and wait for a bolt to strike ...it's alot like fishing...I sometimes use a lawn chair and have cool drinks while I wait for the shot.
