Dive!

Adelie penguins, Paulet Island, Antarctica

I stood in frozen water, with just knee high rubber boots, for almost an hour. That might have been stupid enough. But I also knew a leopard seal was swimming nearby. That's why, I think, these penguins were so wary to jump. For all I know, they were watching the status of my legs too. At any rate, I have learned that to get good wildlife photos you just have to stay in one place and not move for a very long time. They come to you then. While I waited for one of these to jump I also had the wonderful experience of a companion Weddell seal that kept popping up looking at me. You can see that seal in some of my other images. I don't know if I'll ever be able to return here again; I long to do so. I saved for years to make this trip--and, if you are able and have the desire, I strongly recommend entering this other world in our world (and go to South Georgia, too, if you love penguins.)
