Nash Farm Battlefield

This is a picture I took of the Nash Farm Battleground. This field is where "the greatest cavalry charge ever recorded in Georgia history" took place. On August 20th 1864, after destroying the railroad in Lovejoy, Judson Kilpatrick and his men came upon Nash Farms in Henry County. Although Kilpatrick had 4700 men, they realized they were surrounded by Confederate Sol Ross' Texas Cavalry. Their only hope was to engage in a full speed cavalry charge. With sabers drawn Kilpatrick's army lined up in columns and roared down the hill at full speed. As they galloped down the field, the hands, arms and heads of Confederate soldiers came flying off of their bodies. Although the Texas cavalry only had 700 men they were said to have fought with almost superhuman strength. After Kilpatrick's army pushed through the conferate army continued to chase them causing them to abandon wagons, horses, and ambulances as they fled to Decatur. In the end over 1500 men were killed, wounded or taken prisoner. Although there were several battles in the Atlanta area, the battle at Nash Farms will always be remembered as the greatest cavalry charge in Georgia.
