The once-advancing face of the twelve kilometre long Franz Josef Glacier is retreating, due to global warming. Situated in the Westland Tai Pontini National Park, on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, it is visited by tourists who employ helicopters to land them on the more stable upper sections of the ice flow.
