William Cowling, Robert Gutteridge Cowling. William Harold Duck

William COWLING. Private 25482, 2nd King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry died 18th November 1916 aged 29 at Beaumont Hamel. Son of Alice Cowling, of Chapel St., Easingwold, Yorks, and the late Robert Cowling. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

William Harold DUCK. Private 18806, 8th King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry died 19th September 1915 aged 19 at Armentiers. Son of Harold and Mary of 41 Aldermarle Road, Mount, York. He is commemorated on his grandparents Robert and Alice Cowling memorial in St John the Baptist and All Saints Churchyard, Easingwold, Yorkshire and at rest at X Farm Cemetery, La Chapelle D'Armentiers, France. Some times called Wine Avenue.

Robert Gutteridge COWLING. Lance Corporal 2409, 4th Leicestershire Regiment who fell at Loos, 13th October 1915, and died of his wounds on the 15th October aged 19. Son of Frederick and Susannah Elizabeth, (nee Gutteridge) of 141, Upperton Road, Leicester. Native of Clay Goss, Derbyshire. He is commemorated on his grandparents Robert and Alice Cowling memorial in St John the Baptist and All Saints Churchyard, Easingwold, Yorkshire, at rest in Sailly-Labourse Communal Cemetery, France.

Some notes from what remains of his army records.

He joined up on the 31st August 1914 and posted to 4th Leicestershire Regiment. He was aged 18 and 8 months, occupation, apprentice ??. His father Frederick was his next of kin and he was living at 141 Upperton Road, Leicester. On the 25th June 1915 he was posted to France, appointed Lance Corporal on the 9th August 1915. Wounded in battle at Jonquires, France on the 13th October 1915 and was treated at 1/3rd North Midland Division Field Ambulance where he died of his wounds at 7.25 am on the morning of the 14th October 1915.
