Big Sur is a place of rugged, even brutal, beauty, as recognized by writers, poets and photographers over the last hundred years. We might wistfully imagine a life in this place but that life comes with the price of exposure to fires, landslides and road collapses. Living a continent away on the East Coast, I'm constantly drawn to the Central Coast, but never plan a trip there without checking on road closures and fires.
