Crossroads, Stockton, Maryland Eastern Shore
Stockton, Maryland, once a booming town with a railroad station, hotel, mills, stores and more, is now a virtual ghost town with population less than 100. It was a victim of the rapid decline in the oystering industry and closure of the railroad line. This is the only significant intersection in the area of the former town center. I've visited several times to explore the area. This photo from 9/7/2024 is taken standing next to an old grocery/general store and post office, now being slowly rehabilitated after years of vacancy and decay. in the center of the photo is a long vacant structure that apparently was an apartment building and looks as if it might also have had commercial units. Beyond this can be seen a small, white building which was the old firehouse; the modern, new firehouse is out of frame to the left. The far right corner of the intersection is an empty lot.
