Shared Minds at Water Level
"I'm a courier of sorts. My employer has given me the full range of enhancements. I even got to choose my own appearance. I move data around with all this sophisticated equipment, and I share minds. If you have a Class III interface or above I could share with you. You'd be surprised how pleasant it can be. Some people want more than pleasant, though. For them, I put them where they want to be. It's hard to explain in person, but if you find me in the Net it would make more sense. Suffice it to say I'm a mover of minds, and a courier of the subconscious. It may not make sense to an outsider, but there's a lot of money in it."

"The job of the Couriers is hard to explain to someone who hasn't experienced Net consciousness. It's estimated that about 40% of the population in the city are involved in this activity, so it's serious business. For most, just interfacing is as far as they get, but others want to inhabit other bodies, computers, machines, etc. They want to experience the Net from every perspective, and they're willing to pay for the tougher trips. Officially, the government denies most of what the Couriers do is even possible, but many suspect the ruling party has their own for special assignments. Most of the activity is concentrated in the criminal world, though. If what the Couriers say is true, the Net is already alive. If that's correct, then the birth of the human superconsciousness may be just on the horizon. AI isn't too far off, either. When they meet, I can't imagine what will happen."
