externsteine hdr

The Externsteine in the Teutoburg Forest is a natural stone formation in an otherwise non-rocky area. The stones were lifted from the horizontal into the vertical by glacial action. Some human processing has taken place on this aspect, but the other side is mostly natural.

The spelling of this site was standardised in the late 1800s, but the name has no connection with "external". Rather, it is likely named for MLG "Egge", a ridge.
