Bananck cemetery
While strolling through old cemeteries, always check out the symbolism on those gravestones. You will find symbols of death which include weeping willows, hands, birds, shrouds, and wreaths. Unfortunately, babies, toddlers and children did not live to see their preteens because of many the childhood illnesses and epidemics like cholera. It is common to see family plots with graves for many children, and these are sadly marked with small statues of lambs. The Cornish miners were know to plant roses on the graves of their loved ones during the California Gold Rush, and some of those same roses still remain. With today's simple stones or cremation practices, something is clearly lost in history, our culture, and the way we honor our dead.
