Early afternoon shadows
It was just after lunch - 1 pm - when this was taken, yet the sun was just beginning to reach the bottom of the canyon. Light conditions were extreme - to have any color in the canyon wall, the foreground became a silhouette.
The opposite side of the canyon was recovering from a forest fire some years ago. Hard to say if an evergreen forest will be able to grow back in this area.
