Gwithian, abandoned, explosives factory.
The National Explosive works at Upton Towans between Gwithian and Hayle was set up, in 1888, to manufacture explosives, (dynamite, gelignite and cordite), originally for the local mining industry and later for Naval use during WW1. It closed down for manufacturing in 1919 but was used until the 1960s for the storage of explosives.
