Sierra Granite

The Sierra Nevada is an upfaulted, tilted block of the Earth’s crust. As it uplifted the east-facing escarpment was cut into by the erosive action of wind, rain, temperature change, frost, and ice. Thus a series of steep canyons developed. The current relief of 10K' to 14K' along the eastern slopes of the southern Sierras attests to this great uplift, which is still occurring.
