The Summer Of The Variant Fox

This summer I've seen an unusual number of color variants of the red fox ... silver, cross, and this one here which is known as a "bastard" fox. I'm not being vulgar or obscene ... this is what the result of a red/silver mating is known as. And, as I said, I've seen a lot of different color variants this summer ... this one makes number five or six ... I've lost count. I haven't even seen a plain red fox yet!

There are two separate construction jobs going on at the western entrance to Corner Brook ... part of the TCH is being upgraded to a four lane divided highway and a water treatment plant is also being constructed in the area. It was getting close to dark as I was passing by here on this night when I noticed the fox on the new section of highway ... actually, all it is yet is a place where they are taking rock out of the cliff, crushing it, and stockpiling it. Anyway, I pulled over, got out and managed to get a few shots ... had to up the ISO to 1000 to get anything usable, though ... even took a few with flash.

Considering how tame it was, most likely someone at one of the construction sites has been feeding it. If so, I'm sure it won't be long before it meets an untimely end ... lots of traffic and heavy equipment in this area. It never got anything from me, though ... except its photograph taken. :-)
