Crossing Into Autumn
If any local photographer is curious as to how I got this shot, no, it wasn't with a kite. It was with a step ladder. :-) Yep, that's correct ... an eight foot step ladder. The bank of the Humber River has a steep and very dangerous drop off along this section. Plus, the river is extremely deep in this area with dangerous undertows as well, so the city has installed an eight foot chain link fence all along here to prevent accidents from happening.
Anyway, that fence definitely plays havoc with getting a shot of the autumn color in the area ... especially one that includes the bridge as well. (By the way, that's the bridge I was standing on when I shot the photograph I uploaded yesterday and if you want to see the fence, you can check it out in the 'Original' version of that photograph ... if you're a contact, that is)
So, with the fence in mind, I threw a step ladder in the box of the pickup this morning before I went up here to do some shooting. Actually, it was the second time I had been in the area on this day. The first time was when I went to get the truck serviced. At that time, the sun was out and the lower part of the river ... farther downstream than this ... was flat calm and the reflections were simply amazing. However, I didn't have the camera with me at that time.
By the time I made it back with the camera ... and the ladder ... clouds had moved in and light winds had riffled the water downstream where I had intended to shoot. So, I came back here to this spot, pulled my trusty ladder out of the back, set it up near the fence, climbed up and waited for the sun to peek through intermittent breaks in the clouds behind me and illuminate the foliage on the far side of the river. Those breaks were rare and I actually put the ladder back once after getting a few shots, but then dragged it out again and waited some more.
Ultimately I did get quite a few useable shots, but I don't know what the many passing motorists thought as they saw me perched on the top of my bright orange step ladder. :-) But, who cares when you want a certain shot. Right?
The problem is in deciding which shots to upload. Many have only slight variations, but those variations are enought to make me want to upload them all. :-) I chose this one because of the truck crossing the bridge. Its yellow box perfectly matches the color of the autumn leaves.
