Even though it is a difficult climb because of dense vegetation that is known locally as tuckamore, one of my favourite places on the island to visit is the Annieopsquotch Mountains. Those mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountain range which stretch from Alabama in the United States to Newfoundland in Canada. (The name Annieopsquotch was given to this range by the Mi'kmaq Indians and means "terrible rocks"). If you've seen some of the photographs from this area here on my photostream, you know they are well named.
This is a pristine area. You will see absolutely no garbage, no ATV's, and few (if any) humans. You most likey will see Caribou, Arctic Hare, Ptarmigan, Eagles, and/or other wildlife. But, even more interesting than the wildlife are all the erratics you will see...and even more amazing is the way many of them are balanced on other smaller rocks such as this one you see here! When you stand there looking at them, it gives you goosebumps to realize they've been sitting there like that since the glaciers dropped them there many thousands of years ago. I look upon it as one of the great privileges of living in this area to be able to view these wonderful creations of nature. I wish more people would be able to do so.
I could have changed the exposure of the foreground objects with CaptureNX ... that simply superb program from Nikon which will allow you to selectively to do that...but I like this one the way it is. I added the two others just to show the erratic in close-up and one with the GPSr to show you the scale.
