The Virgin Mary, always depicted with her characteristic candor of a young girl, gentle, petite, sweet .... depicted on a cloud while trampling a tempting serpent ...... now are you able to imagine her fully armed with sword in hand, on a white horse ready to do battle against the Saracens ....?! ... you don't not need any imagination, this you can see in Sicily, in Scicli town in the province of Ragusa, when on the last Saturday of May, comes to life the feast in honor of the patron saint Our Lady of the Militia with the reenactment of the "Sacred Representation" with the participation of the villagers who, in period costume, recall the feat of arms of 1091 among the Normans of Count Roger de Hauteville and the Saracens led by the Emir Belcane, with the resolute intervention of the Virgin Mary coming down from heaven riding a prancing white horse saved the people of Scicli from Saracen raids. The "Feast of the Militia" is the only event commemorating the descent of the Virgin on an horse, who, armed with a sword, saved the Sicilians from Saracen invaders. This is a report about the Sicilian feast, unique in its kind, in which, besides the procession and the Holy Representation, is held the feast of the Heads of Turkish, traditional cake of Scicli with reference to the singular form of the Turkish turbans, in memory of the "Battle of Militia ".

... la Vergine Maria, sempre raffigurata col suo tipico candore di giovinetta, mite, minuta, dolcissima....al massimo raffigurata sopra una nuvoletta mentre calpesta un serpente tentatore......riuscite ora ad immaginarla armata di tutto punto con spada in mano, sopra un bianco destriero pronta a dar battaglia contro i Saraceni....?!...Non è necessario lavorare di fantasia, questo lo si può vedere in Sicilia, in quel di Scicli in provincia di Ragusa, quando l'ultimo sabato del mese di maggio, prende vita la festa in onore della patrona Madonna delle Milizie con la rievocazione storica della "Sacra Rappresentazione" con la partecipazione dei paesani che, in costume d'epoca, rievocano il fatto d'arme del 1091 tra i Normanni del Gran Conte Ruggero d'Altavilla e i Saraceni guidati dall'emiro Belcane, con l'intervento risolutore della Vergine Maria che scendendo dal cielo a cavallo di un bianco rampante destriero libera la città dall'assedio straniero. La Festa delle Milizie è l'unica manifestazione in cui si commemora la discesa della Vergine a cavallo, che, armata di spada, salvò gli sciclitani dalle incursioni saracene.
Questo è un report sulla festa, unica nel suo genere, durante la quale, oltre la processione e la Sacra Rappresentazione, si svolge la Sagra delle Teste di Turco, dolce tipico sciclitano con riferimento alla singolare forma dei turbanti turchi, in ricordo della "battaglia delle Milizie".
