Indian Mongoose (Herpestes javanicus)
Native to India. Introduced to Hawaii to control a spreading rats' population. It was a bad idea because mongooses are active during the day whereas rats are nocturnal. It turned out that the introduced and quickly spread mongooses started destroying native birds by killing the birds and eating their eggs.
Taken at Hanauma Bay park on O'ahu, Hawaii, USA on Oct. 19, 2011.
