Another portrait of John Joseph Crooks posing in Arab tribal dress by William Lawrence circa 1880. J.J. Crooks was a member of the Army Service corps during the 3rd Ashanti war in West Africa from 1873 to 1874. He was promoted from Staff sergeant to assistant commissary on probation on 8th September 1873. He later went on to become a Deputy Commissary with the rank of Major and was also for a time colonial secretary for Sierra Leone. He also published several books on Africa including,

Records Relating to the Gold Coast Settlements from 1750 to 1874 and History of the Colony of Sierra Leone, Western Africa.
