J.J. Crooks CDV
A portrait of John Joseph Crooks by William Lawrence circa 1880. J.J. Crooks was a member of the Army Service corps during the 3rd Ashanti war in West Africa from 1873 to 1874. He was promoted from Staff sergeant to assistant commissary on probation on 8th September 1873. He later went on to become a Deputy Commissary with the rank of Major and was also for a time colonial secretary for Sierra Leone. In the photo above he is wearing a full dress uniform with the Ashantee Medal.
In the 1901 Census he is listed as retired and living at Brighton Road, Rathmines
