Canadian Victor

Canadian pressing in brown shellac, of a circa 1909 Victor (USA) recording. Note matrix # is visible; ordinarily not in a US pressing. Patents information is above trademark.

Quite likely the first American recording of this famous number, though reportedly not the first recording of all. A very fortunate collector indeed may have the extremely rare G&T (European) rendition by Mizzi Gunther, creator of the title role, and one which would predate this Victor.

In 1925, Hulda Lashanska also recorded it for Victor on its newly introduced "electrical" (microphone) process. But recordings of Vilia were still few and far between before Joan Sutherland pretty much opened the door for loads of others to record it.
